| Info: | Shallow Grave finds Dead Astronauts
digging through the more dimly lit corners of modern life;
disconnection, obsession, mortality and the strange ways we try to make
sense of ourselves while everything around us feels increasingly
unstable and askew. Moving between the brooding post-punk pulse of “Bodies” and “Get Lost,” the uneasy, shimmer of a love song in “Glistening Things,” and the existential weight of “Shallow Grave” and more pointedly “From Dust,” the album feels in limbo... stuck somewhere between wanting to fade away without a trace and desperately wanting to feel something real, something true. “Stuck (In a Modern Day Cult)” and “Who Kills Who” turn that sightline outward, adding a more confrontational edge to a record otherwise haunted by isolation and self-reflection. Dark, melodic and occasionally abrasive, Shallow Grave pulls from darkwave, synthwave and post-punk without settling comfortably into any one of them. Beneath the syrupy drone and distortion, it’s a record about being human in an increasingly strange world—and the uncomfortable realization that none of us in our current state are getting out of it alive. "We all die young, with the light of the sun. We don't think it through, just a thing we do." Dead Astronauts have spent the last decade carving out their own corner of the darkwave underground, blurring the lines between synthwave, post-punk, goth and cinematic electronic music. Now operating as the duo of Jared Kyle and Slade Templeton, the band has become known for pairing melancholic melodies with haunting storytelling, earning a loyal international following and releases through Cold Transmission Music and NewRetroWave. Following the acclaimed "Ghosts" LP, Dead Astronauts return this autumn with their fifth studio album, Shallow Grave. Their darkest and most immediate work to date. Equal parts intimate and unsettling, the record digs beneath memory, obsession and mortality, proving once again that Dead Astronauts are less interested in nostalgia than they are in the void left behind when those memories fade. |
